The Eternaut is Bruno Stagnaro’s six-episode live-action adaptation of Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s Eisner Award-winning graphic novel. The comics were published in installments from 1957 to 1959 and combined into one volume in 2015. In The Eternaut, a surreal and ominous snowfall blankets Buenos Aires, which has only seen snowfall “three times in its recorded history.” It unleashes a mysterious, life-threatening force that annihilates millions with a fleeting touch (via Tudum by Netflix).

Amidst the devastation, Juan Salvo emerges as a determined survivor, driven to unravel the truth behind the lethal phenomenon and fight against its unseen horrors. Stagnaro, the creator and director of The Eternaut, said, “[The Eternaut] was one of the first things I read in full in my life, when I was 10 years old.” Thus, his approach to the novel’s adaptation, which holds incredible cultural significance in Argentina, would be “faithful to that child reader who came across the story for the first time.”

The streaming game has many problems, but The Eternaut on Netflix is not one of them. The graphic novel’s live-action adaptation was released on the streaming service on April 30. Director and creator Bruno Stagnaro has co-written the show with writer-actor Ariel Staltari. So, anyone who thought the train had left the station can hop on the streaming engine. The Eternaut takes place in Buenos Aires, where the show was filmed. “The city is another living character,” Stagnaro said, weighing on the process of transformation, turning the bustling metropolis into an apocalyptic backdrop. “After a devastating toxic snowfall ki--- millions, Juan Salvo and a group of survivors in Buenos Aires must resist an invisible threat from another world,” the official synopsis reads.
