'Stranger Things' Spinoff: Duffer Brothers Drop the Most Important Update for Future Before Season 5

Published 10/15/2025, 12:19 PM EDT

In the complex universe of Hawkins and the Upside Down, a deep-seated longing for more and an endless anticipation of surprise bloom like an oasis. With Stranger Things approaching its conclusion, the Duffer Brothers provided the most significant update on any spinoff's future. They have established that they have no interest in further spinning out what might be an infinitely and "an insanely convoluted mythology" after Season 5, per Variety. Rather, they would see any additional series within the Stranger Things universe to exist in a sort of different world, though certainly linked by "connective tissue."

This is not an end to expansion but a well-placed comma. The Duffer Brothers' strategy implies that they would like to keep narrative coherence intact while also leaving space for creative offshoots, yet unrevealed. That connective tissue might be expressed through shared lore, thematic resonances, or unexpected winking references to the Upside Down. Meanwhile, two new shows from Upside Down Pictures are on the way to Netflix in 2026, titled The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The animated version, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, is also in the works.

The Duffer Brothers appeared committed to protecting the emotional, mythic heart of Stranger Things, without forcing every new idea upon the already well-crafted narrative. Matt Duffer explained that their universe would live on, but not stretch into conventions. Their imagination for the spin-off world is so tight, even their closest collaborator, Shawn Levy, an executive producer of the show, was unaware, calling them "very protective of spinoff talk."

Bajaria accounted for the decision to release it on Netflix straight away as guaranteeing all viewers access to it at once, considering the streaming giant's steady audience-pulling prowess. Bajaria told Variety, "I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want." Though the Duffer Brothers had shown interest in a limited theatrical release for the conclusion, to allow fans a communal cinematic experience, Netflix rejected the idea, expressing faith in its own accessibility.
