The Duffer Brothers' strategy implies that they would like to keep narrative coherence intact while also leaving space for creative offshoots, yet unrevealed. That connective tissue might be expressed through shared lore, thematic resonances, or unexpected winking references to the Upside Down. Meanwhile, two new shows from Upside Down Pictures are on the way to Netflix in 2026, titled The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The animated version, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, is also in the works.

Matt Duffer explained that their universe would live on, but not stretch into conventions. However, during the Variety interview recently, Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria negated the idea. She affirmed that the much-awaited Stranger Things film is not going to be released in theaters conventionally.

Bajaria accounted for the decision to release it on Netflix straight away as guaranteeing all viewers access to it at once, considering the streaming giant's steady audience-pulling prowess. Bajaria told Variety, "I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want." Though the Duffer Brothers had shown interest in a limited theatrical release for the conclusion, to allow fans a communal cinematic experience, Netflix rejected the idea, expressing faith in its own accessibility.
