Netflix's animation rollout has lately been on a rollercoaster rhythm of tough love, which is evident in its latest mass cancellations. The platform has already enjoyed monumental success with several animated projects with daring sound and visuals, but even so, it is still willing to terminate some high-profile series. Amongst others, Netflix has removed legendary filmmaker Zack Snyder’s grand Norse saga in a baffling move.

Though the streaming giant still treasures animation, their success does not guarantee a long stay on the platform.

Netflix has officially revealed that it would not be renewing Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods, along with two more adult animation shows, for another season. All three of these animations launched their first seasons in 2024, yet there had been no signs of renewal from Netflix. According to What's on Netflix, one of Snyder's co-creators, Jay Olivia, had hoped for the possibility of the next season of Twilight of the Gods. However, Netflix ultimately cancelled the 8-episode series.

Meanwhile, the animated series based on the hot-selling card game, Exploding Kittens, turned into a suburban cosmic comedy with the likes of Tom Ellis, Lucy Liu, Mark Proksch, Sasheer Zamata, and others voicing the cast, also failed to escape Netflix's axe. The good news is, the mobile game version of the card game still exists, per the outlet. Another animation withdrawn by Netflix is Good Times, with the voices of J.B. Smoove, Marsai Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jay Pharoah, which stirred up enough controversy to remain an unsurprising cancellation. However, Zack Snyder's Norse animation world being put to a pause remains shocking.

Inside Netflix's Zack Snyder line-up and the fate of animation

Zack Snyder’s bloody, mythic saga of Twilight of the Gods was one of Netflix’s best gambles; however, he holds quite a few films, retained by the streamer. Projects like Rebel Moon, with its two entries, the live-action zombie affair, Army of the Dead, and Army of Thieves. However, none of these stories would enjoy any further development, though Netflix's animation slate remains jam-packed.
