Will Byers' disappearance led his group to discover the Upside Down, the Demogorgon, and some of Hawkins Lab's horrors. In a sense, he became the catalyst for the events that followed. His extrasensory perception has already been a great help, if not the most, in Seasons 3 and 4. In the 3rd Season, he was the quickest one to detect the return of the Mind Flayer just in time. Had it not been for his quick call to action, Eleven would have been completely unprepared to tackle the threat.

After that, in Season 4, he gave out a big clue that, despite being injured, Vecna was still alive. A lot of viewers now think that in the dark turn that Stranger Things Season 5 will take, Byers will not merely be able to smell evil; he might even literally sneak into Vecna's thoughts, thereby turning his exceptional exposure to the Upside Down into a weapon for the battle.
