While the streaming overload keeps chomping down on hits with its original content, some fan-favorite corpses refuse to stay buried. Now, in a move that has horror fans rising from their couches like the undead at dawn, Netflix has brought the Train to Busan back from the streaming grave. Sure, Netflix’s catacombs are already packed with spine-chillers and scream fests, but the Train to Busan hits different.

Netflix recently brought two South Korean zombie action flicks: Train to Busan and its sequel, Peninsula, on May 2. Trapped in a metal bullet train speeding towards Busan, Train to Busan follows the passengers of the KTX train who must confront the unimaginable horror of a zombie apocalypse, where every moment counts and every decision becomes a matter of life and death. Yeon Sang-ho directed the movie based on a story written by Park Joo-suk.

Train to Busan is credited with launching the highly successful Train to Busan film series. The movie has an animated prequel, Seoul Station (2016), and a standalone sequel, Peninsula (2020). Lee Dong-ha produced Train to Busan. Yang Jin-mo edited the film, with cinematography by Lee Seok. Production companies include Next Entertainment World and RedPeter Film. The former has also distributed the film.

Train to Busan is one of the most popular zombie apocalypse movies of all time. The film stars Gong Yoo as Seok-woo, Jung Yu-mi as Seong-kyeong, Ma Dong-seok as Yoon Sang-hwa, Kim Su-an as Su-an, Choi Woo-shik as Min Young-guk, Sohee as Kim Jin-hee, Kim Eui-sung as Yon-suk, Choi Gwi-hwa as a homeless man, Jang Hyuk-jin as KI-chul, Park Myung-sin as Jong-gil, Ye Soo-jung as In-gil, and Jeon Seok-yong as the KTX driver.

Han Seong-soo as the KTX train team leader, Kim Chang-hwan as Deputy Kim Jin-mo, Shim Eun-kyung as a runaway girl, Lee Joo-shil as Seok-woo’s mother, Woo Do im as Min-ji, Cha Chung-hwa, Kim Joo-hun, and Han Ji-eun round out the cast. Train to Busan premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on 13 May. Later, on August 7, it achieved a record by becoming the first Korean film of the year to break the audience record with 10 million theatregoers. It grossed a whopping $98.5 million against a $8.5 million budget.
