Streaming vs. Theatre: Netflix Gets Major Support From Glen Powell, Following Golden Globe Nomination

Netflix could be leading the streaming stampede, but when the top dogs cannot dodge the sharp-eyed critiques, how safe is a streaming titan holding out on its own? Showbiz is its own circus, where reality takes a backseat. But the reel and the real are the same in more ways than one and in here too, a single sour bite can spoil the whole fruit bowl. Despite Netflix’s blockbuster showing last quarter, its defensive juggle between streaming and theatrical releases has been a constant banana peel. Enter Glen Powell, the golden apple Netflix did not know it needed.

Celebrating his Golden Globe nomination, Powell flipped the script, rolling out the red carpet for the streamer with nothing but glowing praise.

Glen Powell has rounded out the headlines for more than one reason in the past year. But the golden ticket on his sleeve for his 2023 rom-com, Hit Man, has him painting the town red with praises for Netflix. Powell recently sat down with Variety for an interview celebrating his first Golden Globe nomination for Male Actor in a Comedy/ Musical. Reflecting on the lamentations over how movies are robbed of their potential on streaming, Powell sang a different tune, praising Netflix for its “hard work.”

There have been constant rumbles from bigwigs of Tinseltown regarding the importance of a theatrical release as opposed to a streaming one, citing the lack of grandeur and scope in reception. However, Netflix reportedly turned Hit Man into a “cultural moment,” first, with its understanding, and second, with its eye-to-eye translation to the PR. Powell pointed to the bus ads featuring various hit men as a prime example of Netflix nailing it with its killer approach.

Powell believes the genre of movies the audience prefers to tune into at this time of the year brings a “different feeling.” However, Hit Man leaves them “fuller” in the sense it was “designed to be thoughtful and make everyone smile. Hence, although the year-end can be fruitful in summoning the bittersweet, Powell knows how to capitalize on the sweet since this apple really kept some doctors away from Netflix.
