Netflix’s Must-Watch Memorial Day Picks: 5 Films to Honor the Day

The entertainment capital may rely on fiction more than facts to expand the catalog of content in Hollywood. But that does not change the fact that reality shapes the reel. As the streamers undergo a curated shuffle in the wake of the upcoming Pride Month, Tinseltown gets an honorary glow of get-up on the Memorial Day. Celebrated every year on May 26, the federal holiday honors US military personnel who lost their lives while serving the nation. 

To pay homage on Memorial Day, here are 5 films you need to watch on Netflix.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Black Hawk Down is Ridley Scott’s 2001 war film based on Mark Bowden’s 1999 eponymous nonfiction book about a Black Hawk helicopter crew ambushed and nixed during the Battle of Mogadishu. Black Hawk Down is a two-time Oscar winner starring an ensemble cast including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, and Tom Hardy, among others.

Black Hawk Down was Hardy’s first film role. Black Hawk Down is currently streaming on Netflix.

The King (2019)

Adapted from several plays from William Shakespeare’s Henriad, The King is David Michôd’s epic historical drama film starring Timothée Chalamet who plays the Prince of Wales and later King Henry V of England, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Ben Mendelsohn.

The King follows the rise of young King Henry V following the death of King Henry IV and the single combat between the former and Hotspur, as he encounters deceit, war, and betrayal. The King is currently streaming on Netflix.

Da 5 Bloods is Spike Lee’s war drama film, which he directed, produced, and co-wrote. Da 5 Bloods follows a group of four Vietnam War veterans who return to the nation in pursuit of their fallen squad leader and the treasure they buried while serving the country.

The film stars Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr.,Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Jean Reno, and Chadwick Boseman. Da 5 Bloods was Boseman’s last movie released during his lifetime, and it remains one of his best performances to date.

The Six Triple Eight (2024)

The Six Triple Eight is an American war drama film that Tyler Perry directed and wrote, based on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. It was the first and only all black, all-female army corps in WWII. It is based on Kevin M. Hymel’s Fighting a Two-Front War article. The unit was made up of 855 women, tasked with the mission of clearing a backlog of 17 million undelivered mail in Europe in the face of constant discrimination and resource limitation.

The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffrey, Pepi Sonuga, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon, and Dean Norris, among others. The Six Triple Eight is currently streaming on Netflix.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is the second part of his adaptation of Frank Hubert’s 1965 novel Dune. It is an epic space opera film that follows Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, after he unites with the Fremen people of Arrakis to combat against House Harkonnen.

Dune: Part Two stars Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh, among others. Dune: Part Two won two Oscars in 2025. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
