The Internet Takes Sides as Beyoncé Claims Another Accolade, This Time Alongside Iconic Girl Group Destiny’s Child
The end of the 21st century is still decades away, but Billboard has already crowned its greatest pop star—Beyoncé. Last month, the media giant placed Queen B above every other pop star, and sure, not everyone was on board with the decision. But Billboard did not flinch and went ahead to put the pop star on an even higher pedestal. This time, they honored Beyoncé for her iconic girl group, Destiny’s Child.
Destiny’s Child has officially been ranked the biggest girl group of the 21st century by Billboard, even though the band officially disbanded in the beginning of this century itself. The group, which started back in the '90s, initially performed under the name Girls Tyme. Since their debut in 1997, Destiny’s Child has become one of the most successful, beloved, and acclaimed girl groups in music history. Even after splitting up in 2006, the group has reunited a couple of times—Beyoncé’s 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show and her 2018 Coachella headlining performance.

The pop group, however, was not just known for dominating charts and breaking records. Destiny’s Child also became a key voice in the 'Girl Power' movement, which revolved around celebrating sisterhood and female friendships. But despite their legacy in music and pop culture, it seems they have had a harder time winning over their critics, who still do not believe they deserve the accolade Billboard has given them.
Fans have taken to X to question Billboard’s decision to name Destiny’s Child the greatest girl group of the 21st century.
Fans have mixed feelings about Billboard’s honor for Beyoncé’s girl group
Billboard has been causing plenty of drama lately with its accolades. Just last month, as they named Beyoncé the greatest pop star of the 21st century, placing her above Taylor Swift, they also shared a controversial video. And many fans found the video problematic toward Swift, sparking major backlash. Billboard defended their choice, but much like last time, fans still are not buying into the magazine’s judgment.
That said, many fans have been reminiscing about the massive impact Destiny’s Child had on the music industry.

Unlike the uproar over Taylor Swift in December, this time the reactions are more mixed. Some fans wholeheartedly agreed with Billboard’s pick, celebrating the girl group’s legacy, while others argued that it is far too early to hand out such a title. After all, the 21st century is just getting started, and Destiny’s Child has not even been active since the early 2000s.
