Disney's ABC network announced that it would be pulling the popular late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, from its schedule indefinitely. This decision was made in response to a statement from Nexstar Media, which had made it clear that it intended to preempt airings of the program, citing strong objections to the political remarks made by the host, Jimmy Kimmel, regarding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In his Monday night monologue, Jimmy Kimmel said that the “MAGA gang” was trying to feign the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk for political gain.
In his monologue, Jimmy Kimmel stated that supporters of Donald Trump are trying to avoid any connection to the person who killed Charlie Kirk, even though the killer might share some of their views. Nexstar stated that it “strongly objects” to recent comments made by Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets. This action by Nexstar sent a clear message about its stance on the matter.
The fallout from Jimmy Kimmel's monologue transcended the media industry and quickly reached the highest levels of government, resulting in the suspension of the show.
FCC chairman threatens action, escalating the controversy
The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that the FCC had "remedies we can look at." Appearing on Benny Johnson’s podcast, Carr's comments escalated the situation from the media business dispute into a potential regulatory issue. His threat of action against ABC added a new layer of complexity to the unfolding drama, indicating that the consequences of Jimmy Kimmel's remarks could extend far beyond the network's broadcast schedule.

In his podcast appearance, Brendan Carr issued a stark warning, stating, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way." He suggested that if the companies involved did not find ways to change their conduct and take action on Kimmel, the FCC would have extra work to do. A few hours after Carr's remarks, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be preempted forever. The comments by the FCC chairman, along with Nexstar's preemptive move, illustrate the immense pressure placed on the network to respond, even if this is not the first time the host has been embroiled in a controversy with Donald Trump.
