X Has a Field Day With Jokes as Sydney Sweeney’s 'Madame Web' Fails to Qualify for Oscars 2025
The award season is back, and with it comes excitement and the inevitable disappointment for some. Many buzz-worthy movies could not make it to the finish line, leaving fans disheartened. While filmmakers may be the first to seek solace, it is the fans who are left to lick their wounds, often taking to social media to express their discontent. As of yet, the latest blow has come from Madame Web with fans on the edge, some advocating for the film, and others coping with the disappointment of those that fall short.
According to The Wrap, the Academy delivered a crushing blow, declaring Madame Web ineligible for Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Sydney Sweeney's suspense-driven thriller flick, co-starring Dakota Johnson, had garnered much attention, but its mild reviews sealed its fate. Moreover, the backlash on social media made it all the more difficult for the movie to thrive.

Fans are outraged, taking to social media to express their disappointment and frustration. Despite low reach for its commercial failure, it did grab a surprising box office performance that rivaled another 2024 flop, Joker: Folie à Deux Records. The film was thus overlooked by the Academy.
The outrage has not been unanimous. While some have breathed a sigh of relief with the news, others are heartily excited.
Oscar's verdict for Madame Web has fans rolling over
The Academy's decision for Madame Web has left fans divided. While some are outraged, others are relieved, saying it would have won the "worst film" award. One fan mocked how it would not have won anything except maybe the worst movie. Another bluntly stated given how badly the movie fouled, eligibility does not even matter. The mixed reactions reflect the film's polarizing reception, with some defending it and others criticizing its quality.
A couple of others were disappointed in the Academy for their choice, however the sarcasm in their tweets was too loud to ignore.

Despite being a critics' darling, All We Imagine As Light was snubbed at the Golden Globes, losing Best Foreign Language Film to Emilia Perez, whose stars such as Zoë Saldaña even took home solo awards. Its impressive journey continues, however, having won numerous international awards.
