Mark Wahlberg will rev up the minivan again, returning as a former government assassin turned suburban dad in a sequel to his 2023 hit The Family Plan. The movie was an Apple TV original, and its sequel will be too; therefore, it will be available to stream on Apple TV+. Mark Wahlberg is set to serve double duties on The Family Plan 2, as he is on board the endeavor as both an actor and a producer. Michelle Monaghan, his on-screen wife, will reprise her role as well, alongside Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby. Writer David Coggeshall and director Simon Cellan Jones return for the movie set to premiere sometime next year.

Speaking about The Family Plan sequel when it was announced last year, Mark Wahlberg, who has an interesting connection with the Backstreet Boys, said, “I am beyond excited to step back into the shoes of Dan Morgan again, alongside my brilliant co-stars, and with Simon and David returning.” The actor added to his statement, saying that making the film and seeing it become a global fan favorite was incredibly rewarding, and hence, collaborating with Apple and Skydance again for a sequel was something he could not wait for. For those unversed, while Wahlberg enjoyed the positive reception from viewers, The Family Plan was not exactly a critics' favorite following its release.

The first film left critics unimpressed, but with a sequel now in motion, the question lingers: Is redemption part of the new plan?

After mixed reviews for the original, The Family Plan 2 hints at a sharper, more refined ride

The Family Plan boasts a dismal 27 percent Tomatometer rating and an average 61 percent Popcornometer score, revealing the 2023 Apple effort was not a critics' favorite. For an action-comedy film, many on the review aggregator surmised the title served more action and fewer laughs while “aimlessly” imitating an array of films with similar plots. While what is done cannot be changed now, The Family Plan 2 promises a stellar comeback with its premise set in Europe.

The sequel, per Deadline, takes place in Europe, where Dan (Wahlberg) has planned a perfect vacation for his family. His notorious past, however, threatens to kill the buzz in unexpected ways. The Family Plan 2 takes place during Christmas, offering a richer emotional core and a more spirited backdrop that could charm the critics this time around. Whether the holiday twist and European backdrop can turn the tide remains to be seen, but this time, the stakes are as personal as they are explosive.
