Ryan Reynolds Almost Ended Up Behind Bars over Hilarious ‘Just Friends’ Prank

Ryan Reynolds is a polyglot in deadly one-liners. Humor is not just his love language but basically his entire linguistic toolkit. No one is out-quipping his fourth-wall-breaking alter ego, but off-screen, Reynolds still delivers punchlines sharp enough to shave with. His comedy chops have sparked endless giggles, but once upon a prank, they almost earned him a one-way trip to the slammer. The agent of chaos was nearly cuffed, thanks to a Just Friends stunt that went from haha to hold-up.

While Reynolds’ threshold for tomfoolery is sky high, what made him somersault straight over the ha-ha line into the uh-ho territory?

On a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Ryan Reynolds told the host that his 2005 flick, Just Friends, was filmed in Regina, Saskatchewan. “It’s one of my few times that I’ve ever been scared of going to j---,” he said, referring to a sign tweak he made in collaboration with the equally hilarious art department. Apparently, Reynolds and the arts crew snapped over the Welcome to Regina sign, which later read, “Welcome to Regina, which rhymes with fun.”

O’Brien asked whether Reynolds actually got into trouble, but thanks to the town officials’ good sense of humor, he did not. “They thought it was funny because it snapped off,” he joked, hilariously adding that “at first it was vandalism, and then it was class.” While this year’s Oscar host clapped back with an even funnier jab, just about everyone was grateful that Reynolds was saved that day—by humor, from humor, thanks to humor.

While comedy is Ryan Reynolds’ official USP, prank wars are his bread and butter. One of the most comical ones dates back to when he hit Hugh Jackman’s The Front Runner with a spoof attack.

When Ryan Reynolds pranked Hugh Jackman during The Front Runner

In 2018, Ryan Reynolds shared a fake hit advertisement on X against his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star, Hugh Jackman, to dissuade people from awarding him during the Golden Globes or the Oscars. The prank came in the wake of The Front Runner, in which Jackman played 1988 presidential campaign frontrunner Gary Hart. “Hugh Jackman’s upcoming performance in The Front Runner fooled some people into thinking he deserves an award,” he began.

“But before voting begins, some people should consider these facts,” Reynolds added. One of the facts, as the ad frames, is that the Australian actor’s real name is Hugh Michael Jackman and not Hugh Jackman. “Hugh Michael speaks with a charming accent, but he’s actually from Milwaukee,” the Deadpool star joked, continuing a jest he started on X. While Reynolds’ antics could have easily gotten him clawed out, it looks like no one really wants to end up in the bad books of a Jesus, Marvel or not.
