Leonardo DiCaprio's parents, George DiCaprio and Irmelin Indenbirken, have been the two pillars of his immense success in Hollywood since his breakthrough in the 90s with What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Romeo + Juliet, and Titanic. Indenbirken, who was born in Germany during World War II, eventually migrated to the US and became a legal secretary, where she first met George DiCaprio, a comic book writer, publisher, and distributor of underground comics in New York City. He published two issues of Greaser and Yama Yama/The Ugly Head.

The couple then moved to California in pursuit of a better life for Leonardo DiCaprio when Indenbirken found out she was pregnant. Although his parents separated when he was still an infant and finalized their divorce in the late '90s, they were devoted to funding his creative aspirations. Though uncommon among broken families, DiCaprio looked back upon his childhood fondly, even calling his memory "one good experience" in an interview with Vanity Fair.
