The upcoming horror film Primate, directed by Johannes Roberts, is not based on a true story. Instead, it draws inspiration from Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo, which was adapted into a 1983 film. In Cujo, a rabid St. Bernard traps a mother and son in their car, creating a tense survival scenario. Similarly, Primate features a pet chimpanzee named Ben who contracts rabies during a pool party, turning him into a deadly threat. The film follows Lucy and her friends as they barricade themselves, trying to survive the increasingly aggressive animal. 

The newly released trailer showcases intense scenes of the group attempting to outwit the rabid chimp, highlighting the film's blend of horror and suspense. Director Roberts emphasizes the use of practical effects, including animatronics and puppetry, to create a realistic and terrifying portrayal of Ben. Despite the gruesome premise, the film incorporates elements of dark comedy, adding a unique twist to the horror genre. Primate is scheduled for theatrical release on January 9, 2026.

Primate notably made its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in September, quickly earning praise from critics, with an 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film features a talented cast including Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, Troy Kotsur, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, and more. Johannes Roberts co-wrote the script with Ernest Riera, besides directing. His previous directing credits, however, make anticipation for this upcoming offering stronger.
