"Comedy is also very difficult"- Ryan Reynolds Shuts Down Critics After Being Ridiculed for His 'Actors on Actors' Feature for 'Deadpool'

Ryan Reynolds is the most bankable star in Hollywood at the moment. And his stardom shot to another level with the billion-dollar blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds has been in the industry for over three decades. But nothing got him noticed the way Deadpool did. The X-Men superhero became an alter ego of the Canadian actor. However, despite becoming a Hollywood heavyweight, he has often been accused of playing himself on screen, with no versatility or range. And now, it is finally time for Reynolds to defend his acting abilities.

Ryan Reynolds recently took a stand for not just himself but also the entire genre of comedy and explained why it deserves more respect.

Ryan Reynolds was recently included in Variety's Actors on Actors feature, alongside Andrew Garfield. They were invited to the talk show for their 2024 releases, Deadpool & Wolverine and We Live in Time. Following the announcement for the December 9 interaction, a fan took to X to criticise Reynolds’ inclusion in the panel because of his portrayal of Deadpool- especially alongside Garfield who played such a serious role. In his defense, Reynolds responded to the post on X, writing, “comedy is also very difficult”. He added, “both disciplines are beautiful”.

Reynolds juxtaposed comedy alongside drama to explain why they are both challenging in their own way. Speaking of why he as a comedy actor deserved to be on the Actors on Actors slate, Reynolds explained that comedy “has an added dimension in that it’s meant to look and feel effortless,” which is not as simple as it may seem. While both 2024 movies were appreciated, their genres were starkly contrasting.

Even so, there is a major reason as to why this decision of teaming Reynolds with Andrew Garfield for the Actors on Actors discussion could be very insightful, despite them seemingly being a mismatch.

It is not that Ryan Reynolds has never played a serious role. From survival, psychological and action thrillers to heartfelt dramas, the actor has shown time and again that he is not all about jokes. But his experiments in serious roles did not receive as much attention as his comedies did. With Deadpool, though it is meant to be a light-hearted, action-packed, comedic role, Reynolds has put more than a decade of blood and sweat into bringing it to life.

Reynolds' experience and appreciation of both drama and comedy could bring about a fascinating acting discussion for the show. And while he never really shared screen with Andrew Garfield before, they do share a heartwarming camaraderie, which was very evident from their famous lip-lock. This could further make the session all the more entertaining.
