As the world awaits a new outbreak, the creators behind one of the 21st century’s most influential horror films are finding their way to add the seed of the second wave of the virus. Among the many films that have haunted viewers over the years, few are as unique as 28 Days Later.

28 Days Later ready to stir up the waves once again
In 2002, 28 Days Later did not just revive the zombie genre; rather, it redefined it. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film’s drab vision of a rage-filled apocalypse produced a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007. When the sequel generated a whopping $65 Million, hopes for a third movie were at an all-time high. Finally, the long-awaited third part of the franchise, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to hit the theaters on January 16, 2026, providing the 13th reason for fans to rewatch the horror extravaganza, 28 Days Later.
The franchise’s return is not just nostalgia, but it is a chance to expand on a universe that left audiences with more questions than answers. The new trilogy brings in a fresh cast with Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell into the epic tale, in order to explore how both humanity and the virus have evolved.
Despite the horror franchise's iconic status in the horror world, it already has strong competitors as acknowledged by the creator himself, and with the wide time gap between the movies it remains to be seen if audiences will rush in to revisit the rage twenty years later. Return to the Outbreak: How '28 Days Later' Began
The original 28 Days Later opens with an act of animal liberation gone wrong. Animal rights activists break into a lab, and the rage virus-infected chimpanzee is freed mistakenly. The virus spread safter the chimpanzee ends up biting people. What follows is a harrowing journey through London, as protagonist Jim, played by Cillian Murphy, wakes from a coma to find society in such a condition. Jim faces not only the infected but also the darker sides of human nature. Following this epic tale, the original creators are back to create another one.
