Esotericism in a Korean Mystery thriller – Svaha: The Sixth Finger starring No. 456 is now on Netflix

The Korean drama Squid Game is now a global sensation; a show that has put the nation on the world map; it is not surprising that people are discovering and exploring more works from the nation and of course the stars from the show. One such movie is Svaha: The Sixth Finger; starring Lee Jung-jae or what we call him number 456 from Squid Game. The mystery-thriller is now streaming on Netflix, and you should definitely check it out.

Koreans are particularly creative with their art, and this movie is yet another example of it. So, here is your basic guide for you to tell you everything you need to know about it.

The religious aspects of the movie

The movie has a very interesting plot revolving around faith, mythologies, scriptures, and murders; while the main focus of the movie of course lies on Buddhism and esotericism, the movie also has many parallels with stories from the Bible. It even has some elements that relate to Maitreya and Shichuan.

Myths like the Massacre of the Innocents and the story of Jakob and Esau are very clearly represented in the movie; one can easily draw out the parallels between these stories and the thriller.

The plot of Svaha: The Sixth Finger

The plot of the movie is rather complex; it has many different elements that come together to finally give the story its body. The story begins with a pair of twins one of them is normal, while the other one is not destined to live long and is kept inside a shed like an animal.

Pastor Park, played by Lee Jung-jae works at exposing cults and is hired in order to investigate a group called “Deer Mountain”. One of the members of the group murdered a girl and brought the police’s attention to their existence.

While investigating the group, Park finds about the motive for which they are working and learns about many ancient scriptures, stories, and myths. How killing innocent children can be a way for an evil man to survive. The whole incident makes Park question God and his willingness to let innocents die; it may also make you question your beliefs and faiths at least once.
